Director's Message
The year 2022 is an important one in the history of ISEC, for as of January 20th the institute has completed 50 glorious years. Coinciding with this event, a function to inaugurate the golden jubilee celebration was held on Founders’ Day. The Honourable Governor Shri Thawar Chand Gehlot, Government of Karnataka, inaugurated the year-long golden jubilee celebrations. Mr Ashwath Narayan C N, Honourable Minister for Higher Education, Government of Karnataka, was also present at the meeting.
ISEC initiated the Golden Jubilee Lecture series on February 3, 2022. In the first six months of 2022, nine Golden Jubilee lectures have been organised. We have been privileged to hear from Professors Kaliappa Kalirajan, Maitreesh Ghatak, R S Deshpande, P G Chengappa, G Haragopal, M K Sridhar, Abdul Aziz, K V Raju and Jyothis Sathyapalan on topics covering the design of anti-poverty policies, inclusive development, environmental concerns, MGNREGS and so on.
In addition, three thematic seminars have been organised, thus far, as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. The first thematic seminar on ‘Governance and Development in Karnataka’ was focused around the discussion of contrasting trends occurring in the state, that of Karnataka achieving high growth rates and being the leader in information technology, while also being a state with marked regional, sectoral and social inequalities. Another Golden Jubilee thematic seminar was conducted with the aim of understanding the impact of demographic changes in the country on society and the environment. In the third Golden Jubilee seminar on ‘State Finance Report 2021-2022’, there was an in-depth discussion on the current fiscal position of various states, the evolving concerns and the way forward.
The first six months of 2022 also witnessed many other academic events on campus. The Karnataka Rajyotsava Lecture on ‘Films and Environment’ was delivered by the noted film personality Sri Suresh Heblikar. The Professor L S Venkataramanan Memorial Lecture on ‘Strategies for Doubling Farmers Income in India’ was delivered by Dr Ashok Dalwai, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The Ramakrishna Hegde Memorial Lecture on ‘Binding the Local State: State Capacity and the Democratic Deficit in India’ was delivered by Dr Patrick Heller, Brown University, USA. Fourth, there were special lectures by distinguished scholars such as Professors Narendra Pani, David Soll, Deepak Rajagopal, Kamaljit K Sangha. Last but not least, ISEC’s Golden Jubilee celebrations were also taken to the field. A field level demonstration cum training workshop on ‘Wild Edibles of the Male Mahadeshwara Betta (MM Hills) and their potential for the socio-economic development of local people’ was organised in MM hills.
With regard to regular academic activities, ISEC faculty members completed 16 research projects covering themes such as agricultural development, urban development, health, climate change & environment and ageing during the period from January-June 2022. As many as 22 new research projects have been initiated by the faculty during this period. The themes covered in these research studies are skill gaps in agriculture, costs of and returns to milk producers, economic assessment of forest losses, impact of climate change on children’s education, impact of skill development, the platform economy, participation in Grama Sabha meetings, livelihood and gender, financial inclusion, minority diversity index, special economic zones, unmet family planning needs, child malnutrition and so on.
The faculty have disseminated the findings of their research work in manifold ways. Three books have been brought out by faculty members through reputed publishers including Routledge and Springer on research areas such as decentralised governance and development, supply chain networks and politics and governance. The faculty members have also published 41 papers in reputed journals and edited books.
As far as the PhD programme is concerned, as many as ten PhD degrees were awarded during this period. A large number of PhD scholars presented their work in progress during the Bi-Annual Seminars and obtained feedback for improvement of their theses. The new batch of 24 PhD candidates joined the institution in January 2022.
I am happy to inform our readers that ISEC has recently become very active on social media. In the last six months, a total of 98 posts have been made on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook relating to ISEC working papers, books, campus events and so on. In all, there were 57,000 viewers across the three social media accounts –– and the number of followers is steadily increasing.
