Xu holds a PhD degree in Urban Studies from the United States. Xu is the international fellow in Social Work and Social Governance at East China University of Science and Technology in China. Xu will be a research assistant at McGill University in Canada after completing postdoctoral programs at Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in France and University of Hong Kong. Xu is the founder of City Culture Lab, based in metropolitan Paris.
